Patio covers and shade structures in Las Vegas
Solid and lattice patio covers, carports and shade structures.
Best Vegas Roofer is a referral service, not a roofing contractor. We connect you with independent local roofing contractors who perform the work under their own licence and insurance. We do not perform roofing work and we do not warrant or guarantee any work performed. There is no charge to be matched.
In a valley with this much sun, a patio cover is not decoration. Shade over the west-facing side of a house makes outdoor space usable for several more months of the year and reduces the solar load hitting that elevation.
Patio covers are also, structurally, roofs. They are built like roofs, they fail like roofs, and they are almost always the least maintained roof on a property because nobody thinks of them as one until the furniture underneath gets wet.

Solid, lattice or louvred
A solid cover gives full shade and sheds rain, which makes the space usable in a monsoon shower. It is the most substantial option and it needs proper drainage and flashing where it attaches to the house.
A lattice or pergola cover gives filtered shade and lets air move, which can be more comfortable in still heat, but it does not keep rain off. A louvred or adjustable system gives you both at a higher cost and with moving parts that become a maintenance item.
Attached covers tie into the house wall and that connection is a waterproofing detail that has to be got right. Freestanding structures avoid that entirely, which is sometimes the simpler answer.
Wind is the load that matters here
Monsoon microbursts produce brief, strong, gusty winds, and a patio cover is essentially a large flat surface on posts. Uplift, not weight, is what takes them apart.
Footings, post anchorage and the connection back to the house are what resist that, and they are exactly the parts that are cheapest to under-build and impossible to inspect once finished. It is worth asking specifically how the structure is anchored.
Permits and HOA approval
A patio cover is usually a structure, and structures generally need permits. Attached covers may also involve setback and lot coverage rules, and requirements differ across valley jurisdictions.
If you are in an HOA community, approval is typically needed before construction and is usually a separate process from the permit. Both are far easier to do in advance than to resolve afterwards.
Who actually does the work
An independent roofing contractor, working under their own Nevada licence and insurance, not Best Vegas Roofer. They inspect your roof, quote you directly, and warrant their own work. Roofing in Nevada falls under contractor licence classification C-15, Roofing and Siding, issued by the Nevada State Contractors Board. (Nevada State Contractors Board, License Classifications)
Before work starts, check them yourself. The Nevada State Contractors Board publishes a free public licence search, so you can confirm a contractor is licensed, check the classification they hold and see their licence status before any work starts. Frequently asked questions
Do I need a permit for a patio cover in Clark County?
Usually yes, because it is a structure. Attached covers can also involve setback and coverage rules. Requirements differ between unincorporated Clark County and the valley cities, so confirm with the building department serving your address.
Can a patio cover attach to my existing roof?
Commonly yes, and that connection is the critical waterproofing detail. It needs proper flashing into the existing roof rather than sealant alone, which is why it is worth having a contractor who does roofing rather than only carpentry.
Will it survive monsoon winds?
A properly engineered and anchored structure is designed for it. The failures tend to be in footings, post anchorage and the house connection rather than in the cover itself, so ask how those are being done.
Can my existing patio cover be reroofed?
Often yes, if the structure is sound. Many valley patio covers have low-slope roofs that can be recovered or coated, which is considerably cheaper than rebuilding.
