Gutters and roof drainage in Las Vegas

Gutters, downspouts, scuppers and drainage sized for monsoon volume.

Best Vegas Roofer is a referral service, not a roofing contractor. We connect you with independent local roofing contractors who perform the work under their own licence and insurance. We do not perform roofing work and we do not warrant or guarantee any work performed. There is no charge to be matched.

Plenty of Las Vegas homes have no gutters at all, and in a city averaging just over four inches of rain a year that can seem entirely reasonable. The problem is how that rain arrives.

Close to a quarter of the valley’s annual rainfall comes in the monsoon months, frequently in short intense bursts. A roof with no drainage management sheds all of that straight onto the ground at the foundation line, in volume, in minutes. Desert soil does not absorb it quickly, which is how you end up with water against a foundation, eroded landscaping and, in some cases, water finding a way in at ground level.

What goes wrong with valley gutters

Where gutters do exist, they fail in fairly predictable ways in this climate:

  • Blockage from wind-blown debris, gravel, palm fronds and roofing granules
  • Sagging or pulling away as hangers loosen through years of thermal movement
  • Separated or leaking seams and joints where sealant has perished in the sun
  • Downspouts discharging straight against the foundation instead of away from it
  • Undersized gutters and downspouts that overflow under monsoon rainfall rates
  • Damage from ladders, tree limbs and storm debris
  • Blocked scuppers and overflow outlets on flat roofs, which is the same problem on a different roof type

Size for the storm, not for the average

This is the point most easily missed. Gutter capacity has to handle peak rainfall intensity, not annual total. A monsoon cell can deliver a substantial share of a month’s rain in under an hour, and a gutter sized for a gentle average simply overflows, which leaves you with no drainage exactly when you needed it.

The same logic applies to flat roof scuppers and overflows. They are there for the worst hour of the year and they need to be clear before it arrives.

Where the water goes matters as much as the gutter

A gutter that collects water perfectly and discharges it at the base of a wall has moved the problem, not solved it. Downspout extensions, splash blocks and drainage that carries water genuinely away from the building are the part that protects the foundation.

In desert landscaping this is worth thinking about alongside the hardscape, because water directed onto decorative rock without a path away from the house tends to find its own path.

Who actually does the work

An independent roofing contractor, working under their own Nevada licence and insurance, not Best Vegas Roofer. They inspect your roof, quote you directly, and warrant their own work. Roofing in Nevada falls under contractor licence classification C-15, Roofing and Siding, issued by the Nevada State Contractors Board. (Nevada State Contractors Board, License Classifications)

Before work starts, check them yourself. The Nevada State Contractors Board publishes a free public licence search, so you can confirm a contractor is licensed, check the classification they hold and see their licence status before any work starts. Frequently asked questions

Do I even need gutters in Las Vegas?

Not every house does, and plenty manage without. They earn their place where roof runoff would otherwise land against a foundation, erode landscaping, or pour across an entrance or walkway during a monsoon cell. A contractor can tell you whether your roof and grading actually need them.

How often should gutters be cleared?

At least once before monsoon season. In this valley the debris is wind-blown rather than leaf fall, so it accumulates year round and does not follow the autumn schedule people expect.

Can I clear them myself?

Ladder work at roof height is a genuine fall risk and it is the most common way homeowners get hurt doing maintenance. If you do not have a safe, stable setup and someone with you, it is worth having someone else do it.

My flat roof has scuppers rather than gutters. Same thing?

Same principle, and the same failure. Scuppers and overflow outlets block with debris and then the roof holds water it was never designed to hold. They belong on the same clearing schedule.
